The holidays can be a tough time for anyone, especially if they are away from family and friends. This is especially true of active-duty service members and veterans who live apart from their loved ones. This holiday season, Pain Free Patriots wants to share ways you can help veterans feel supported and loved.
Reach Out to the Veterans in Your Circle
The simplest thing you can do to help veterans during the holidays is reach out to the veterans in your family, circle of friends, and acquaintances. A heartfelt thank you or simple “thinking of you” goes a long way. Consider inviting the veterans you know who may be spending the holidays alone to your own celebrations.
Volunteer for an Adopt-a-Veteran Program
Several organizations run adopt-a-veteran programs. The Elks Lodge organization runs a program that connects volunteers with veterans who are lonely or isolated. Volunteers visit, send cards, and invite veterans to Lodge and other events. The VA also runs a voluntary service program that gives individuals and corporations a chance to serve the veterans under the VA’s care. Participating in these programs or a similar one can be a blessing to vets and volunteers alike.
Sign Up to Adopt a Military Family
Remember that when a service member serves, their entire family serves. Military families often live on a strict budget to make ends meet when a loved one is on active duty or permanently disabled from a service-related injury. Finding the funds to spend on Christmas can be a challenge. Toys for Tots is a popular toy drive run by the US Marine Corps. It gives toys to children in need. The Soldiers’ Angels Adopt-a-Family program allows volunteers to provide supplies for Christmas dinner and toys for a military family in need.
Ask How You Can Best Serve
If you’re struggling to think of ways to serve veterans over the holidays, help is just a phone call away. Reach out to your local Legion, VFW, DAV, Red Cross branch, or VA facility to see how you can help. If you’re in the Twin Cities area, Pain Free Patriots would love to hear from you. We’re in need of volunteers and supporters during the holidays and throughout the year. Your contributions help veterans in chronic pain find relief without the use of surgery or prescription pain medications.
