“What Do We Have to Lose?”: A Veteran Finds Freedom from Chronic Pain

Hi, my name is Bob Stokes. I was in the United States Navy. I went in July 1970, right out of high school. I served until July 1974.

What kind of chronic pain were you experiencing?

The pain I experienced started with low back more than 20 years ago. The other problem I experienced was a piercing pain right between the shoulder blades. It was like the pain you would experience if you overdid it working one day, but that pain goes away in the morning.

Mine didn’t. It constantly aggravated me day after day after day.

How did the chronic pain affect your life?

Often, my chronic pain made it difficult to go to work. When I did go to work, it made life miserable. As far as my daily routine with my family, it would affect any kind of recreation. If my back was bothering me, I’d just stay home.

I suffered with the pain over a period of 20 years. I had good days and I had bad days, but I had more bad days than good days.

How did you hear about Pain Free Patriots?

I heard about the program on the news. Channel 5 had a spot on Pain Free Patriots. My wife’s eyes opened up wide and she said, “We should try this.”

I said, “I don’t think they’ll ever take me.”

She replied, “What do we have to lose?”

My wife did the homework for me and applied, and I got called right away. When I came in for the interview, and they said I fit, and thank God I was in. I was so happy. It gave me hope because I had pretty much just figured I would live with this pain the rest of my life. You kind of get that way, and you find ways to deal with it.

How did Pain Free Patriots help?

When I first started out, I was really aggressive with the program. I was coming three days a week. Every day I saw a little bit of improvement. So, it really opened my eyes, and I thought, “Okay, this is working.” And now, I’m in maintenance mode and doing stretches at home. I feel great.

To live without this pain is amazing. It makes your whole life better.

Would you recommend Pain Free Patriots to other veterans in pain?

I would recommend this program to anybody who suffers from neck, back, or any kind of pain. I was at a point at my life when I was ready to give up on everything. I would recommend it to anybody.
